There is growing interest in the use of inhaled beta-agonists (e.g., Ventolin, Albuterol, Inhalerol) in the treatment of asthma. The aim of this study was to assess the safety and tolerability of the new beta-agonist inhaled Ventolin in the treatment of asthma. A total of 40 patients with acute asthma who received two doses of inhaled Ventolin (2.2 mg and 4.6 mg) were included. All patients had moderate to severe clinical asthma, with a mean (SD) age of 55. The treatment included two doses of the Ventolin 2.2 mg and the 4.6 mg inhaler. Patients who required a second dose, and those who were unable to tolerate the 2.2 mg dose, were included in the study. The primary endpoint of the study was the reduction in all-cause asthma attacks, defined as the time from randomization to the initiation of the treatment.
The safety of inhaled Ventolin was assessed using the investigator-assessed short-form health-related quality-of-life (SF-5D) question. The study was terminated at 12 weeks post-treatment. The study was stopped at 24 weeks post-treatment because of serious adverse events, and the data of the adverse events in the adverse event database were not available. The study was terminated at 2 weeks post-treatment.
There were no significant changes in the mean total and change in all-cause SF-5D score. There was also no significant difference between patients who received a placebo and those who received a Ventolin 2.2 mg treatment.
